Is a Seine River Cruise Worth It? An Honest Answer
The big boats are a tourist cliché. The small private ones are one of the most romantic things you can do in Paris. Here is the difference.
Yes and no. A Bateaux Mouches cruise in July with 400 other tourists and a scratchy loudspeaker is not the Paris moment you are picturing. A small private boat at sunset with a bottle of champagne absolutely is.
What to avoid
The large glass-topped boats that leave every 30 minutes from Pont de l'Alma. They are loud, crowded, and the commentary is auto-played in eight languages back to back.
What to book instead
A private open-top boat for six to eight people, one hour before sunset, launched from Port des Champs-Élysées or Port de la Bourdonnais. Bring your own champagne — most operators allow it.
The best moment
Passing under Pont Alexandre III as the streetlights come on. It is the single most photographed minute in Paris, and it deserves the reputation.
