Versailles or Giverny? Choosing Your Day Trip From Paris
Both are an hour outside Paris and both are unforgettable, but they suit different travelers. Here is how to decide.
If you only have one day outside Paris, the choice usually comes down to Versailles or Giverny. They are radically different experiences, and picking the wrong one for your traveling style is the most common mistake we see.
Choose Versailles if...
- You love history, architecture, or anything royal
- You want a full day with plenty to see indoors and out
- You are visiting between November and March, when Giverny is closed
Choose Giverny if...
- You love painting, gardens, or Impressionism
- You want somewhere quiet, small, and photogenic
- You are visiting between May and July, when the water lilies are at their peak
The compromise
In May and June both are spectacular. If you have two days to spare, do Versailles on the first and Giverny on the second — they balance each other perfectly.
